The Brunswick Records label was a leading source of classic pop and soul from the 60’s and 70’s. Among the legendary hits in the Brunswick stable are the entire output of Jackie Wilson, from his 1957 debut hit “Reet Petite” through the1967 smash “Higher And Higher”, as well as the Chi-Lites “Oh Girl” and “Have You Seen Her”, Tyrone Davis’ “Turn Back The Hands Of Time” and “Can I Change My Mind”, Barbara Acklin’s “Love Makes A Woman” and Young Holt Unlimited’s “Soulful Strut”. Other artists in the Brunswick stable include Gene Chandler, Lavern Baker, Erma Franklin, Lost Generation and Vaughan Mason & Crew. Brunswick began humbly in the late 50’s, when Jackie Wilson manager Nat Tarnopol helped convert the former serious music imprint into a bonafide R&B label. The label’s early success was powered by the release of 11 Top 10 R&B singles in its first 4 years, including the Berry Gordy, Jr/Tyran Carlo-penned “To Be Loved”, “Lonely Teardrops”, “That’s Why I Love You So” and “I’ll Be Satisfied”. By the mid-60’s, the label had charted another 17 Top 10 R&B tracks, including major pop crossovers “Baby Workout” and “(Your Love Keeps Lifting Me) Higher And Higher”. By the time Wilson was felled by a heart attack in 1975, Tarnopol’s Brunswick had scored with other classic soul artists, helping break the careers of Tyrone Davis, Barbara Acklin, the Chi-lites and Young Holt Unlimited. All told, Brunswick landed 150 charted singles on the Billboard R&B charts, making it one of the most successful soul labels of all time.
