Chaka Khan
Khan is widely recognized as one of the most respected and influential female vocalists of the Pop Era. Breaking out in the early 1970's as the featured singer for jazz/funk collective Rufus, Khan quickly made her mark as both performer and songwriter, contributing to a string of enduring hits including “Sweet Thing,” “Tell Me Something Good,” “Once You Get Started,” “Do You Love What You Feel” and “Ain’t Nobody.” In a five year span, Rufus featuring Chaka Khan earned one platinum and five gold albums, five #1 hits and two Grammy Awards. Khan launched her solo career in 1978 with the Ashford & Simpson classic “I’m Every Woman.” Subsequent albums contained such self-penned hits as “Clouds,” “What Cha Gonna Do For Me” and “I Know You, I Live You.” 1984's “I Feel For You,” featured the blockbuster title track as well as chart-topping pop hit “Though The Fire,” a song which gained new prominence several years ago when it was sampled by Kanye West for his debut single “Through The Wire.” Khan built a devoted following through the 1980's and 1990's, taking her legendary stage show around the world, collaborating with such musically varied contemporaries as Eric Clapton, Miles Davis, Bruce Hornsby and Prince and charting more singles like the Quincy Jones-produced Ray Charles duet “I’ll Be Good To You” and “Missing You” from the film Set It Off, which also featured Brandy, Tamia and Gladys Knight. Khan’s accolades as a solo artist thus far include six Grammy Awards, Lifetime Achievement Awards from Essence Magazine, World Music Awards and Billboard Magazine and an honorary Doctorate from the Berklee School of Music. Chaka is touring and recording actively, continuing to promote the Grammy nominated Funk This! Collection and has seen her music featured recently in HBO’s Entourage and Tyler Perry’s Meet The Browns.
