RuPaul Charles was a fixture of the NYC and Atlanta club scenes in the 80s and 90s, performing solo or with his band, Wee Wee Pole. He became a recurring performer at the annual drag festival, known as, Wigstock and appeared in the documentary, Wigstock: The Movie. With all of his notoriety and the backing of Tommy Boy, RuPaul released his first album, Supermodel of the World. The album featured the MTV favorite “Supermodel (You Better Work)”, which reached #2 on the Billboard Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart. His next two singles, “Back to My Roots” and “A Shade Shady (Now Prance)” climbed to the top of the Hot Dance Music/Club Play chart. In 1993, RuPaul took over for Kiki Dee on Elton John’s remake of “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart”, which appeared on Sir Elton’s Duets album. Further developing his repertoire of hits, “Snapshot”, the first single off of RuPaul’s second album, Foxy Lady climbed to the #4 spot on the Dance chart. Free of labels, 2004 saw RuPaul releasing his album Red Hot on his own RuCo Inc. imprint. The album, which reached #9 on the Top Electronic Albums chart, features three top 10 dance hits, “Looking Good, Feeling Gorgeous”, “Workout” and “People are People”. Fresh off the success of his reality TV show in 2009, RuPaul’s Champion, featuring the singles “Cover Girl” and “Jealous of My Boogie”, rose to #1 on the iTunes dance album chart. RuPaul’s most recent release, Glamazon, debuted on Billboard at #11 on Dance/Electronic Albums and #8 on Top Heatseekers.
